Kuncai Technology and Terre des Hommes Join Forces to Combat Child Labor in the Mica Supply Chain

2020.11.05

Kuncai has been focusing on the mica supply chain control work, adopting a zero tolerance policy for possible child labor in the mica supply chain, and regarded the use of child labor as a serious crime, and resolutely do not allow child labor to occur in any part of Kuncai's production process. However, as a responsible global corporate citizen, Kuncai's goal is not only limited to this. in January 2016, Kuncai contacted Terre des Hommes, an international children's rights protection organization headquartered in Holland, and hoped to cooperate with it in order to eliminate child labor in the mica supply chain. Kuncai's proposal was quickly recognized by Terre des Hommes, and the two parties immediately began discussions on the design of the project. Kuncai invested a great deal of time and energy in the project design process on how to improve the supply chain, control the supply chain and how to audit the supply chain.

In March 2016, Terre des Hommes and Kuncai launched the "Beauty and Cost" project, which will last for three years (2016-2019), with the fundamental aim of eliminating child labor in the mica supply chain, caring for minors and providing better education conditions for schoolchildren. The basic purpose of the project is to eliminate child labor in the mica supply chain, care for the healthy growth of minors, and provide better education conditions for school-age children. The project's milestone is to gradually eliminate child labor in the mica resource areas of Jharkhand state in India, and the ultimate goal of the project is to save 10,000,000 children from child labor in the districts of Kodama and Kiridi in Jharkhand. In order to contribute to the project, Kuncai and QolorTech, a partner of Kuncai Europe, will donate €500,000 and €100,000 respectively, which covers about 10% of the total budget of the project, and will be used for building child-friendly villages, assisting economically disadvantaged families, guaranteeing the standard of living of disadvantaged families as well as their family incomes, enabling children to receive education and improving the employment of disadvantaged families through vocational skills training, and providing them with the necessary skills for their families. Through vocational skills training, the project will improve the employability of the poor families and create job opportunities for them. At the same time, Kuncai will also be the ambassador of the "Beauty and Cost" program, and work with Terre des Hommes to promote the success of the "Beauty and Cost" program.

In September 2016, Kuncai India was established, Kuncai will purchase mica directly from mines and process mica flakes through its own processing plant through Kuncai India. The establishment of Kuncai India will strengthen the mica supply chain control work in India, and hire the global authoritative independent third-party verification agency Bureau Veritas as the company's long-term auditor, and join Terre des Hommes as well as the Indian BBA and other non-governmental organizations to participate in the annual routine audit of mica supply chain control, in order to improve the quality of mica supply chain audit work.

The assertion of children's rights to physical development, nutrition and education is the responsibility of society as a whole. Eliminating child labor in the mica supply chain requires not only a structural and holistic analysis of the entire mica supply chain, but also the attention and participation of all members of society, including at-risk child protection organizations, communities, governments, civil society organizations, the law, and private companies. Kuncai, as a partner of the "Beauty and Cost" project, calls for more members of the society to join us and work together to solve the problem of child labor. Although a grain of rice cannot compete with the moon, it still creates its own light, illuminating a small world; a new bud, although so small as to go unnoticed, signals the coming of winter and the coming of spring. Although our individual power is limited, we hope to change the world in our own way. We firmly believe that we will be able to achieve our common goal of eliminating child labor in the mica supply chain.
